Two 7 Year Olds, Same Story. One Gets Local News, One Gets Today Show

Do you all remember young Latarian Milton, the boy who stole his grandmother’s truck and took it for a joyride?? He got a spot on local news after running over a couple of mailboxes and scraping a few parks cars. I thought nothing of it more than he needed a role model that would tell him that ‘hoodrat” things weren’t cool and that he really could have hurt someone and to lead him in a better direction.

Then I saw this on MSNBC’s Today show.. This kid, 7 years old as well came on and no matter how hard they tried to hide it, it seemed like they were all smiling and just happy that their kid made the news. This is ridiculous! Both of these kids need guidance. I don’t know about you but I feel some kind of way that this latest incident was broadcasted on MSNBC in a light, joking manner and the prior was looked at as a case in bad parenting.

  1. Completely different tone and coverage. One kid is a cotton candy all American kid and the other one is a hood rat. Its good that you have both videos to show the difference in coverage between whites and blacks

  2. Hmmmmmm…interesting. Honestly, here are the root problems as I see them:

    1) With the Black child, where is his mother? Why is she (and/or the grandmother) allowing a NEWS STATION to interview their 7yr old child?
    Can we say…GHETTOOOOOOOOOOOO

    2) Notice that in the MSN video with the white child, the father is doing most of the talking, obviously because he has the “brains” in the family. If you pay attention to the mother’s brief commentary, she almost seems to not even
care that the incident occurred. At least the father mentions how grateful he is that this did not become a multiple tragedy for his family or any other that may have been involved in a potential accident while his child was driving.

    3) This is the most disturbing to me: The Black child was “mad at his mother, because she brought her BOYFRIEND over who smokes.” Okay…so this kid is allowed to show resentment to his MOTHER? How many of us would have been put SIX FEET UNDER by our parent (or parents) if we even BEGAN to think that craziness in the presence of an elder?? Yep…I thought so.
Then, when asked whether or not he knew it was wrong to take the truck he responds that “Doing bad stuff is COOL?” Yeah, I was DONE at this point.

Of course, the media is going to make the white child the media darling. He
is well groomed, QUIET, and obviously a bit embarrassed over what he did. When the Black Child is asked if he understands that his grandmother will now have to pay for the damages he inflicts, his response is “Well, can my MOTHER help her?” NO indication for taking responsibility for what he has done. No video games for weekend? How ’bout never seeing the light of day for a MONTH! Maybe I’m just ‘old school,’ but my kid(s) would have been unavailable for comment due to being knocked into NEXT WEEK if they did something like that. DAMN a CPS taking them, after I’m done with them, you can HAVE ‘EM if I’ve failed that horrifically as a parent.
