In the Fall of 2009 I decided that I wanted to lose at least 12 lbs.; weighed 162 lbs. By Winter of2009/2010 I managed to gain an additional 8 lbs. One of my best friends told me that as long as my jeans still fit that I’d be fine… Well, my jeans (even the “safety/fat pants”) didn’t fit well anymore… something really had to be done. And there was another issue, sometime last year I got the ambitious idea to run the ING marathon in 3 years. Yes, indeed, something really had to be done!

There’s some significant history to this weight gain/loss process of mine. I have a 4-year-old daughter and managed to lose the baby weight by a low-carb diet. At various times in the past 6 years I’ve gained and lost significant amounts of weight. However, I have not been physically fit. When I was younger, I was an athlete so I technically had the foundation but it had been years since I maintained focus on being healthy and strong.

I remember the day I weighed myself and internally screaming “I WEIGH ONE-HUNDRED AND SIXTY-EIGHT POUNDS?!?” I also took a good long look at myself in the mirror wearing nothing but my “pom-poms” (as my daughter calls it) and skivvies. I knew that what I was looking at could be “fixed” but it had been so long since I looked how I *wanted* to look… I didn’t know what the end result might be. I just prayed and said I’d make it happen. It was more than just losing 18 lbs (at the very least)… I wanted to see definition in my arms again, strengthen my abs to what they once were, diminish those “love handles” (Why in the world are they called that anyway?? There’s nothing lovely about them!), and tone my thighs to be giggle-free (this was especially important since I NEVER wear shorts because I’ve never liked my legs since they’re not naturally firm).

I am blessed with the best friends a woman could ever hope for and received a plethora of advice and support. I initially started with some extreme kind of diet which proved to be, well, impossible; I consequently hand-picked the best advice for me and came up with a plan that was both feasible and pleasing. It was a complete lifestyle overhaul which included eliminating unhealthy foods from my everyday life, incorporating exercise and maintaining long-term focus. This was beyond just losing some pounds- it was time to shed weight, build a better body and a better mind.

I’m also a huge foodie and knew that I didn’t want to deprive myself of stimulating my taste buds. Part of my process has been to find/develop new recipes and tweek old ones to suit my new lifestyle. I learned to shop differently at the supermarket and challenge my culinary imagination to include more whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables in to my diet. I haven’t missed anything that I used to eat. Actually, my body has adjusted and now craves healthy foods. The human body is a beautiful thing.

My initial exercise of choice was running. I knew it challenge my entire body and mind. I would lose weight and strengthen. But I also had to find alternatives for the days that I couldn’t make it out and I don’t own a treadmill so I’ve also relied on tried and true exercises. My rule is “If I’m not drenched in sweat, I’m not pushing hard enough.” Every week I try to exceed whatever I achieved the prior week and I’ve been successful!

The Goddess Body Diet wasn’t my initial approach but it turns out that the guidelines were quite similar to my own…
- Abstinence from Alcohol: This was not a major issue. I usually only drink socially and recognized the adverse effects of alcohol on any weight-loss endeavor. Empty calories galore!!

- Abstinence from Sex: Well… this was even less of an issue. A relationship and potential intimacy weren’t my focus. I was far more concerned with what I needed to do to better my body than satisfying *ahem* momentary urges.

- At least 6 hours of sleep every night: I have always been a 7-8 hour kind of girl but I must say that exercise had helped me to sleep a lot better and my body needs it!

- No packaged food unless it is signified as Organic: This was HUGE for me! Early on I started paying attention to the nutrition facts on everything and realized that so many of my usual foods where nutritionally horrific! I focused on incorporating as many natural and organic foods as possible in to my every day life.

- Consume a gallon of water every day: I’m close to a gallon… I’m working on that one still. For various reasons, it’s been quite challenging for me to drink a gallon of water but water is absolutely critical especially when you’re working out! Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

- No farmed fish or meat: This is still in the works for me but I have essentially cut out red meat.

- Dairy products must be cage free, non- homogenized: This is also in the works… but I have switched to 2% organic milk. I must say that it’s far better than the regular 2%, which I really can’t tolerate.

- 3 days of cardio workout. Can include core workouts for strength training (i.e. Yoga, Pilates, Swimming): I work out 3-4 days per week. My preference is running and I’ve worked up to 1.75 mi.; I can run 1.25 mi. straight. Otherwise, my home work-out currently consists of 200 (20 reps) sit-ups, 160 (20 reps) squats, 30 side leg lifts, 30 push-ups, and 30 ab/leg lifts. When I first started, I ran 0.25 mi (max), and my sets were of 15 reps; I couldn’t do more than 10 push-ups or 15 leg lifts.

It’s been 4 months and through it I have lost 21 lbs., managed to work my way up to running 1.75 mi. (I barely got through 0.25 mi. when I first started), begun to see significant definition in my legs, arms and abs and most of all, I just feel good! I decided to lose 2 more lbs. to give myself “wiggle room” but my journey absolutely continues in building and maintaining a healthy body. I have loads of encouragement around me but my biggest cheerleader is me- there is something remarkably rewarding about feeling myself surpass the extent of my last work-out. And, ING awaits me in 2 years!!

To build anticipation for the release of the 2011 Ford Fiesta, the Ford Motor Company has enlisted 100 agents to participate in the Ford Fiesta Movement. Each agent was given a 2011 Ford Fiesta, a camcorder, free gas and insurance for six months. Rustin Moore of AlumniRoundup.com was chosen to be an agent and recently discussed his experience with the Ford Fiesta Movement. –a.r.

How did you get involved with the Ford Fiesta Movement?

I am co-founder of AlumniRoundup.com. It’s a social conglomerate of 18 social networks that’s dedicated to HBCU alumni. I found out about the Ford Fiesta Movement after I produced a show for the Ford Flex through my Web site. They wanted 100 people who had a big following online. I put in an application and now the Fiesta is a backdrop to my life.

How has this program benefited you and your business?

The burden of wear and tear on your car and gas will restrict you from going places sometimes. Now, I don’t have an excuse to drive everywhere.

What are some of the adventures that you have recorded since receiving the car?

Every month, we have to complete an official theme-based mission. For the first month, it was a travel mission. I documented my trip to Russell’s Cave in Alabama. The next mission was technology month. I got Sirius radio installed in the car, so now I can tune into my favorite stations. The next mission was social activism. I did work with Habitat for Humanity in Jonesboro, Ga. That’s the mission that made me step back and realize how blessed that I am because the work I did helped to change someone’s life. I also did an adventure month. I drove to Charlotte, [N.C.], and got the opportunity to skydive.

What should consumers know about the 2011 Ford Fiesta?

It’s very unique. This car has leather seats, Bluetooth and fog lights. I can hook up my iPod and use my laptop.

Bryndan is my brother, Co-Founder of AlumniRoundup, father of my 2 nephews and niece and husband to my sister in law. Since the days of him karate kicking me in the chest, swatting EVERY basketball shot I threw up and Indian burning my wrist, he has been a great teacher, warning me of what is to come and how to prepare for it. Truth be told, we had an odd relationship growing up as we are 7 years apart; I was always too young to hang out and had nothing in common to speak about until that day he dropped me off at Drew Hall of Howard University in room #333. From that day on, we have become the best of friends.
AkaTito is a good friend and business partner with us in AlumniRoundup. I’ve known this dude since like ’93.. its crazy for me to even type that .. realizing how long it’s been! We grew up around the corner from each other in NJ and went to the same Sunday School(where I almost gave him an eye jammie for copying off of my Starter jacket.. lol). Through the years, our families have become intertwined; we refer to each other as brothers and our mothers call each of us their son. Together we have braved heat advisories on the basketball court, sprinting from exotic, mystical animals in the woods and even a 360-degree accident on the NJ turnpike. I wish we had some of our early adventures on camera because we have had some wonderful times and continue to bring them to you via Youtube
We documented their rich history, notable residents and partook in food, music and art. Ali is a all around good brother.

In business as is in life there are early bloomers and there are late comers. When it comes to Web 2.0, as companies continue to define themselves and better understand how to monetize their efforts (zero revenue websites are no longer the rage), early bloomers are much better prepared to further grab market share and expand, leverage their experience and focus their efforts where it is most profitable and, most importantly, avoid following the pack and involving themselves in markets they do not know and understand. HBCU Connect is one of these early bloomers.

I spoke with HBCU Connect CEO, William Moss III, a Hampton University alumnus, about how the competition in the market has changed over the years and the future direction of the enterprise. As far as the teamwork within the organization, Moss’ views are clear cut:

“I don’t care how big or small a company is or how poor or rich they are, when it comes to creating a competitive website they are only as good as their best programmer, designer, marketer, etc. I won’t pretend everything we do is the prettiest, but when it comes to online strategy and functionality we know what we’re doing.”

Clearly, teamwork is not a buzzword to Moss but a value that has held true to form as HBCU Connect has grown over the years. And that growth has not been easy with old rivals as well as new ones such as Alumni Roundup, who have arguably overtaken HBCU Connect in viewership. Recent numbers show Roundup’s page views exceed 100,000 daily with a membership of 80,000. Roundup includes over 15 sites dedicated to various HBCUs, of which the flagship site was Bison Roundup, dedicated to Howard University, where the founders and brothers Bryndan and Rustin Moore are alums.

“Growing your core market is much much more challenging now than it was when I started, but when it comes to the larger competitors, the idea is not to compete with them at what they do best, you stick to what you do best and who you know”, Moss said. And it is that singular focus on the HBCU network and its environs that has catapulted HBCU Connect to be a formiddable player in the social networking space in which they compete. Connect began in 1995 – before Myspace and Facebook , and even before direct competitors like Blackplanet.

Moss went on to say, “Think about it… We wrote 100% of our own social networking software from day one. Of course we had the idea to do a general market ‘facebook’ for non-black students and alumni, but guess what? It was not my passion and I can’t pretend I know that market inside and out.” Which is what distinguishes Connect from its direct and indirect competitors. Other social networking sites were focused on niche markets as well, Facebook for college students and Myspace for high school and college students. It wasn’t until later that both not only expanded but began to market themselves toward a general audience. Where Connect differs is in the amount of brands it has and the leverage it can wield. Brands include Connect Platform, which is a Ning-like social networking platform that allows users to create their own social networks without any coding or previous tech experience; African American Careers, a recruiting and job community site for diverse populations; the recently acquired HBCU Network, which started around the same time as Connect and was previously its main competition; and Lee Moss Media, a joint venture with Dante Lee, that has even more web properties most notably, Black Women Connect. Collectively these sites draw over 2 million visitors a month.

What has and will continue to propel Connect to success is its ability to strategically look forward and position itself in the right manner. When it comes to strategy Moss feels “By us making strategic acquisitions, partnerships, and launching [innovative] market offerings, if we do it right, we should be serving [and benefiting] our recruitment partners.” In regard to the future of Connect and his other ventures, Moss exudes confidence when he considers the future, “…when it comes to growing revenue, it’s easy when you consider the fact that we are just scratching the surface of what kind of revenue exists for what we do. I doubt any of our competitors know the breadth of monetization opportunities there are for a social network. We just exploit these opportunities behind the scenes.”
